Album Review:
Second First Impression (January, 2007)
Erin Haley makes a pretty solid first impression with "Second First Impression", her album recording debut. Based out of Barrhead, Alberta the 23 year old singer has already created some chart impression with the singles "Keep On Leavin", and the recent "Fools Lie", and follows that success up with the current "Can't Let You Go", all of which are featured on this debut album. Haley delivers her music with a sultry vocal feel, not unlike many of the current crop of young Nashville female vocalists.
Listen also for some really interesting cuts here in "Hair and Makeup", a fun tune coming from the pens of fellow Albertan Marlee Scott and Nashville based Canuck, Tim Taylor. The album's title track "Second First Impression" is a solid country/rocker, while Margarita is a catchy item, worthy of future single consideration. The pop/country standouts include "I Can Love Anyone I Want To", "Over My Shoulder", and "One Glory".
Erin Haley also shows special vocal skills here in the inspirational "Closer To God", and shows a tallent for writing songs, with her pen involved as co-writer in three cuts.
One of the real standouts on the album is Erin Haley's version of "Papa Come Quick (Jody and Chico)", a song popularized first by Bonnie Raitt back in 1991 and also released back then by Bill Vera (he co-wrote the tune with Chip Taylor)...it's only coincidence that the Wilkinson's have also just cut the same song and have released it as their current single, perhaps beating Erin Haley in the process with a "countrified" hit version.
"Second First Impression" was produced by Bart McKay at his studios in Saskatoon, with four tunes (*) co-produced earlier by Warne Noyce and Bill MacArthur.
